US base jumper dies in French Alps
French mountain rescue workers found the body of a 43-year-old US national Sunday, a day after he disappeared following a base jump in the Alps.
The man, from California, had been practising the extreme sport of base jumping, in which parachutists jump from a fixed object rather than from the air.
With a friend he had jumped from the Alpine peak of Pointe de Sans Bet in the Alps, 2,200 metres high, but when his friend could not find him after landing he gave the alert, said the local gendarmerie.
Mountain rescue workers found his body at a very steep section of the mountain, about a thousand metres from where he had jumped.
Gendarmes said the victim, an experienced base jumper, had not had time to open his parachute.
