UN forces rescue more diplomats in I. Coast
UN and French forces on Friday evacuated ambassadors and diplomats from the Indian, South Korean, South African and Israeli embassies in conflict-stricken Ivory Coast, UN officials said.
UN peacekeeping chief told reporters that 23 countries had asked for help to get their diplomats away from the Ivory Coast presidency and residency when strongman Laurent Gbagbo is holed up under siege.
UN officials named the Indian, South Korean, South African and Israeli embassies among those evacuated. They said the German, US and Brazilian embassies were among those awaiting UN help.
The diplomats are moved in armored personnel carriers with military escorts, officials said.
