RENNES, France, Nov 27 (AFP) - French customs officers this week seized five tonnes of cigarettes being smuggled from Spain to Britain aboard a truck pulled over for a roadside inspection, officials said Thursday.

The Spanish driver of the truck, stopped near the western city of Rennes on Tuesday, showed the officers documents saying he was transporting folded cardboard boxes but a sniffer dog found the cigarettes hidden under the cargo.

The cigarettes, of a brand "much sought after" by smokers in Britain, which has among the highest tobacco prices in Europe, were confiscated along with the vehicle and a criminal report was filed, officers said.
