CRETEIL (AFP) - Two homeless men had their throats cut with a sword in an attack in the Paris suburbs on Wednesday after refusing to hand over their money, police said.

Both of the victims are in hospital, one of them with serious injuries, after the attack in the early hours of the morning in Villejuif, south of the capital.

The two homeless men were approached by a man demanding their money and cigarettes.

When they refused the attacker pulled out a 40 centimetre (16 inches) sabre and slit their throats before escaping.

The most severly injured man, a 39-year-old with serious neck injuries, was taken to the Pitie-Salpetriere hospital in central Paris. The other victim, who is 34-years-old, was taken to Henri Mondor hospital in nearby Creteil.
