Two people have been arrested in Mali for involvement in the abduction of two Frenchmen on November 24 in the northern town of Hombori, security and judicial sources told AFP Wednesday.

The two were identified as the manager of the hotel where the men were staying and their guide, a security source and a judicial source confirmed separately.

Serge Lazarevic and Philippe Verdon were abducted by armed men and taken to an unknown destination.

The kidnapping was claimed by the Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM). The group also claimed responsibility for the abduction of three Westerners a day later.

The group was started in the late 1990s by radical Algerian Islamists who sought the overthrow of the Algerian government to be replaced with Islamic rule. AQIM was linked to Al-Qaeda in 2006.
