Two of the hostages seized on Monday from an oil rig off Nigeria are believed to be French, a spokesman for France's foreign ministry said.

"We have indications concerning the abduction off Lagos and the possible presence of two French nationals among the people abducted," said ministry spokesman Bernard Valero. "We are looking to confirm these indications."

The oil rig in Nigeria's volatile Delta region was attacked early Monday and five crew members are believed to have been taken hostage, the company that oversees the rig, Afren, said in a statement.

It did not state their nationalities, but one security source said they were two Americans, two French and a Canadian.
