GONNEHEM , France, May 17, 2007 (AFP) - Several thousand bikers lined up to be blessed Thursday by two Catholic priests at Gonnehem, northern France, in a special ceremony to mark the holy festival of Ascension.

In full leathers and riding their vehicles, the bikers were blessed by two priests from the Chapel of Bikers, under the protection of Our Lady of the Road, after having ridden en masse around the neighbourhood.

The ceremony has been organised for the last 11 years in the village at the initiative of the bikers.

The chapel at Gonnehem is revered locally for the role it played in helping a resistance fighter escape the Germans in September 1944.

He rode his bike into the chapel and the wind fortuitously blew the doors shut behind him.
