Auch - Four people were killed, two from Britain, in an accident in southwest France when two cars collided head-on on a country road, firefighters said Saturday.

A 34-year-old mother and her three-month-old baby from the Gers region and the British driver of one of the cars, who had been living in Beaumarches for several years, died on the spot, firefighters and the Depeche du Midi newspaper said.

The Briton's passenger, a visiting friend from Scotland, died in an ambulance. The two were in their sixties.

Police were investigating what caused the accident late Friday on a straight road near Beaumarches.

It took firefighters two hours to extricate the four from the cars.
