PARIS, June 26, 2007 (AFP) - A French couple and their accomplice have been arrested after allegedly trying to cheat a lottery player out of 35 million euros (nearly 49 million dollars) of winnings, police said Tuesday.

The couple run a tabac, or tobacconists, in a chic area of Paris that sells tickets for the Euro Millions lottery, which pools the stakes of players from nine participating countries.

When the customer's numbers finally came up -- instead of telling him so he could collect his winnings -- the couple are alleged to have asked an accomplice to pose as the winner, claim the money, and then transfer it to their bank account.

The fraud came to light when the accomplice's bank got suspicious and alerted the police.
