VILNIUS, Feb 26 (AFP) - The homicide trial of French singer Bertrand Cantat, accused of killing his actress girlfriend Marie Trintignant, will open on March 16, court officials said.

Cantat, lead singer of the group Noir Desir, has been accused of causing the death of Trintignant by beating her during a hotel room row at a Vilnius hotel where they were staying.

The 41-year-old actress, who had been in Lithuania to work on a French tele-movie, died in Paris on August 1 of swelling to the brain, nearly a week after the row.

The singer, who claimed Trintignant fell and hit her head during the argument, was taken into custody immediately after and has spent the time in jail pending the outcome of the criminal probe.

On Wednesday, a Vilnius district court decided to prolong Cantat's detention to April 29.
