PARIS, Sept 25 (AFP) - The French oil company Total said on Sunday it did not know when it would reopen operations at its biggest refinery in the Texas Gulf Coast region, in the wake of Hurricane Rita.

"We do not know when the Port Arthur refinery will reopen", a spokesman told AFP by telephone in Paris.

Total said on Thursday it had shut down all its operations in the Texas Gulf Coast region, evacuating staff from a dozen sites including the large refinery at Port Arthur.

Other oil majors also shut down their operations as Hurricane Rita, one of the biggest storms ever recorded in the region, bore down on the Texas coast.

On Saturday Total said that it would be "several days" before the refinery reopened.

The Total spokesman said it was still evaluating the cost of the hurricane, but that the damage was less than expected.

"We are still doing an inventory of the damage, which seems to be limited," the spokesman said.

Total has some 10 refineries, including chemical and petrochemical, in the Texas region which has been hit by Rita, and employs about 100 expatriates and 1,000 locals there.
