BANGKOK, Jan 30, 2007 (AFP) - French oil giant Total said Tuesday it has made three gas discoveries in the Gulf of Thailand in blocks operated by Thailand's PTT Exploration and Production.

The discoveries were made at three wells in the Bongkot field, in which Total, PTTEP and BG Asia Pacific are partners, the French firm said in a statement.

Production from the new wells could begin as early as 2009, it said.

The Bongkot field already produces 600 million cubic feet of gas a day, along with 18,000 barrels of condensate.

Production in Bongkot began in 1993, but the latest finds are the first new gas found there in years and could extend the life of the project.
