BORDEAUX, France, June 17, 2007 (AFP) - Former French prime minister Alain Juppe failed to win a seat in parliament in Sunday's elections, meaning that he will also lose his cabinet post as environment super minister and government number two.

Juppe, 61, told supporters in the southwest city of Bordeaux that he will present his resignation from the government on Monday.

The defeat was an embarrassment for President Nicolas Sarkozy who brought Juppe back from political exile after his conviction in a party finance scandal and gave him one of the most prominent portfolios of his right-wing government.
