MULHOUSE, France, Oct 25 (AFP) - Education authorities in eastern France on Monday launched an investigation into the vicious beating of a three-year-old by a gang of five-year-olds at her infant school.

The parents of the girl have filed a police complaint against the three assailants - two boys and a girl - who bit, scratched, kicked and punched their daughter so badly she had to spend a night in hospital.

They are also considering legal action against the school, and against four teachers who were supposed to be supervising the playground of the school where the incident took place.

The beating occurred Friday of last week, in an infant school in the town of Altkirch, near the German and Swiss borders.

A regional education official, Pierre Fernandez, said the investigation would start with a meeting Tuesday meant "to see the configuration of the playground and determine what happened".
