POISSY, France, June 12, 2006 (AFP) - Three French sewerage workers died Monday after they inhaled toxic fumes during a maintenance job in the western Paris suburb of Poissy, local authorities said.

Employees of a private company, they are believed to have been overcome by hydrogen sulphide — a gas which can build up in underground sewers from the decomposition of organic matter.

A fourth man was being treated in hospital.

A judicial investigation has been launched, and labour inspectors were also called in to check if safety norms were in place.
