Three Macedonians have been arrested while making their getaway from Geneva to France after stealing a safe and 10 computers from the World Health Organization, local police said Friday.

Geneva police spokesman Jean-Philippe Brandt said that after questioning the three, "police were able to determine that the safe and the computers were the ones stolen a little earlier from the WHO."

The three were caught by Swiss border police while they were trying to cross into France overnight Thursday.

"Two of the individuals had blood on their hands as they were hurt while breaking the windows on the ground floor of the WHO," said border police spokesman Michel Bachar, who added that the break-in was probably linked to organised crime.

He also said the stolen computers belong to a Lithuanian delegation which was in Geneva to attend a convention on AIDS. Police did not release further details on the contents of the safe.

A WHO spokeswoman said she did had no more information about the case.
