PARIS, June 15, 2007 (AFP) - An estimated 8,000 people dressed all in white gathered at a Paris landmark Thursday to dine off china plates and drink champagne in a US-style flash mob event.

Partygoers turned up at Arc de Triomphe within minutes of each other, ferried in on coaches from around the capital and bringing with them folding chairs, tables covered with white linen tablecloths and a three-course meal complete with wine.

Row upon row of tables were rapidly set up in pre-arranged formations, and guests settled down to their three-hour candle-lit dinner along the 12 avenues leading from the landmark arch at the city's Place de l'Etoile, Paris's biggest road junction.

The site of the annual dinner in white' is kept secret from the Paris authorities, and the invited participants are only told where they are going when they board the coaches at various meeting points in the suburbs earlier in the evening.
