PARIS, Jan 23, 2006 (AFP) - Fashion's most luxurious and sumptuous sector takes centre stage here on Monday, when design heavyweights kick off three days of spring-summer haute couture shows.

Chanel, Christian Dior, Christian Lacroix, Givenchy and Jean-Paul Gaultier head the list of 16 collections being unveiled on catwalks at various venues across the French capital.

Lower profile designers such as Adeline Andre, Dominique Sirop and Franck Sorbier will also reveal their take on summer's style for the elite, in what is seen as an effective way to buff up a label's image.

Valentino, the Italian master of red carpet glamour, joins compatriots Giorgio Armani and Maurizio Galante on the first day of the French couture federation's official calendar.

British designer John Galliano, whose winter haute couture show last July in tribute to Christian Dior earned him a standing ovation, also displays his creations for the French label on Monday.

Portugal's Felipe Oliveira Baptista, who made his debut on the official couture calendar in July, returns to confirm his place on Monday as an officially invited member.

Later in the week sees the turn of French designer Christophe Josse, who is a newcomer to the official calendar, and Lebanon's Elie Saab, while a host of the latter's compatriots feature on the packed unofficial "off" calendar that runs in parallel.
