PARIS, Aug 13 (AFP) - French defence equipment group Thales reported on Friday flat sales for the first half of the year but signalled a rise of 1.9 percent in the second quarter.

PARIS, Aug 13 (AFP) - French defence equipment group Thales reported on Friday flat sales for the first half of the year but signalled a rise of 1.9 percent in the second quarter.

The group, which also makes professional electronic equipment, said that sales in the first half were little changed from the equivalent figure 12 months ago, edging up 0.35 percent to EUR 4.573 billion (USD 5.58 billion).

In the second quarter sales rose by 1.9 percent on a 12-month comparison to EUR 2.632 billion. This compensated for a decline of 1.7 percent in the first quarter.

The group did not provide a forecast for the whole of the year.

Thales had said in March, when it reported results for 2003, that sales would rise by 2.0 percent this year and that operating profit would rise by 2.0-5.0 percent excluding the effects of changes in exchange rates.

Thales said on Friday that sales, on the basis of constant exchange rates and on a comparable asset base, had risen by 3.3 percent in the first half.
