Thailand's Thaksin cancels Paris appearance: organisers
Thailand's ex-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra cancelled an appearance in Paris for security reasons, organisers said Monday, after France's government said it asked him not to speak publicly.
"We strongly regret that (Thaksin) has decided today not to come to France for strict security reasons," said a spokeswoman for the Centre of Political and Foreign Affairs, the Paris think-tank that had invited him to speak.
The French foreign ministry said last week it had persuaded Thaksin to abandon the planned speech because of the tense situation in Thailand, where political instability has boiled over into deadly street violence.
Thailand's government accuses Thaksin of backing and financing the "Red Shirt" protestors involved in the street protests. It last week issued a warrant to arrest him on terrorism charges.
