A 17-year-old boy and three friends were arrested Friday for allegedly firing an air rifle at mothers collecting their children at a French nursery school, slightly injuring three people, officials said.

LYON - The 17-year-old was picked up by police at his home near the nursery in the city of Lyon, southeastern France.

"The young man confessed to taking several shots," said public prosecutor Xavier Richaud. "It seems that he then passed the air rifle to three of his friends who were with him."

The boy's friends were also arrested and were in police custody.

Regional security official Xavier de Furst said the injuries were largely bruises and scratches, and no child was involved.

"This is far from being a crazed shooting spree... it's a moment of recklessness and childishness," added Richaud.

The women were targeted as they crossed a park on their way to the school to collect their children.

Regional officials said earlier that the gunman also fired at a policeman who tried to intervene but he was not hurt.

Elite police crime-fighting squads were sent to the scene, while a security cordon was set up 150 metres (yards) round the school. Furst said psychological aid would also be provided.
