One of four people shot and wounded in the French Pacific island territory of New Caledonia this week, allegedly by a friend after a night of drinking, has died of his injuries, prosecutors said Thursday.

The 19-year-old had been shot in the head and thigh on Tuesday in Kamere, a popular area in the north of the capital Noumea, said state prosecutor Claire Lanet. He died in hospital on Wednesday night.

According to Lanet, the 25-year-old gunman returned home to fetch a gun after an argument with his friends and opened fire on the group from his bedroom, wounding two of them and two other young people.

One of the three surviving victims was still in hospital but his life was not in danger, Lanet said. The other two have already been discharged.

The alleged gunman, who has been detained since Tuesday, appeared in court on Thursday. He faces charges of murder, attempted murder and aggravated assault.
