VERSAILLES, France, Sept 13, 2006 (AFP) - Three teenage girls have been placed under judicial investigation for the torture and sexual abuse of a 14-year-old fellow pupil at a school for children with special needs, justice officials said Wednesday.

The three -- aged between 15 and 18 -- beat the girl, then burned her skin with cigarette ends and sexually abused her with a coat-hanger, according to investigators.

The incident took place last week on the first day of the new term at the Le Notre boarding school at Sonchamp, 60 kilometres (40 miles) southwest of Paris.

Experts said the case illustrates the growing tendency to violence among teenage girls.

"It's becoming more and more frequent for girls to act like boys and take their violence out on others," psychiatrist Xavier Pommereau told Le Parisien newspaper.
