PARIS, Feb 27, 2007 (AFP) - A French 16-year-old boy is under investigation accused of murdering of a classmate and slicing up his body with a carving knife, a judicial official said on Tuesday.

Prosecutors believe the teenager strangled his friend to death on Thursday after inviting him to his family apartment in northeastern Paris. The pair are thought to have fallen into a violent argument over a girl.

Hoping to hide the body, the boy allegedly tried to chop it up in the bathtub with an electric carving knife, and was planning to douse it with hydrochloric acid.

The boy's parents discovered the victim's mutilated body upon returning from holiday on Friday, immediately alerting the police.

Their son was placed under formal investigation Sunday on charges of murder with premeditation.
