PARIS, Dec 18, 2006 (AFP) - Up to half of France's school teachers went on strike Monday to protest a government plan to increase the number of hours they spend in the classroom.

Several thousand gathered in Paris to march on the education ministry in a demonstration of their anger at the measure, which is to be signed in January.

The ministry is looking at adding one to three hours a week to some teachers' rosters in a bid to reduce the state teaching payroll by up to 2,800 posts.

But all 15 teachers' unions have denounced the plan and called for what they said would be the biggest strike in three years.

Union leaders said more than 50 percent of teachers had answered the strike call, while the education ministry put the figure at around 35 percent.
