TOULOUSE - A man suspected of shooting dead his two brothers, two sons and a daughter-in-law near the southwestern city of Toulouse was in critical condition Sunday after trying to commit suicide, a judicial official said.

The bodies of the man's brothers, aged 53 and 47, and sons, aged 25 and 26, were found Thursday evening in a house in the village of Magdeleine-sur-Tarn.

All were shot in the head with small-calibre bullets.

Officials said 55-year-old Jean-Claude Vacquier shot himself in the head when he was about to be arrested after returning to the house where the murders took place, Toulouse deputy prosecutor Bernard Lavigne told AFP.

An international warrant for Vacquier's arrest had been issued after the killings. His car was spotted near the crime scene in the evening and police cordoned off the area.
