Salvadoran police have released a member of the feared Mara 18 gang arrested in connection with the killing of a Franco-Spanish journalist whose film on gangs was to debut this month.

San Salvador - Salvadoran police have released a member of the feared Mara 18 gang arrested in connection with the killing of a Franco-Spanish journalist whose film on gangs was to debut this month.

"We have not found anything linking (the suspect) to the murder of (Christian) Poveda," said a police spokesman on Saturday.

The arrest was made on Thursday, a day after Poveda was brutally gunned down outside the capital San Salvador.

The murder happened just weeks before the release of his latest documentary on violent drug gangs that blight the country.

He had been filming in La Campanera, a suburb of El Salvador's capital where gangs known as "maras" fight for criminal turf.
