PARIS (AFP) - A French actress who died by assisted suicide in Switzerland last week sent a posthumous message to President Nicolas Sarkozy Tuesday urging the legalisation of euthanasia.

Maia Simon's death notice in Liberation newspaper included a quotation attributed to Sarkozy that "Life belongs not to the one who stands by the bed but to the one who suffers."

"You quoted Nicolas Sarkozy so that his statement may not remain mere words, and so that we can all ... push forward the cause which you held so dear," her family and friends said in the notice.

Simon died on Wednesday in Zurich with the help of the Swiss association Dignitas. Aged 67, she had been suffering from cancer.
