FRETHUN, France, March 21 (AFP) - Rail traffic through the tunnel linking France and Britain was blocked for three hours at the French end on Monday by sailors protesting against government plans to reform registry rules for shipping.

Around 100 men cut fences surrounding the Eurotunnel terminal near the port of Calais late morning and invaded the tracks, preventing the movement of trains in both directions. Twelve Eurostar trains to and from London were stopped.

The protest ended at around 3:30 p.m. (1430 GMT), officials said.

On Tuesday the parliament in Paris is to debate a law to simplify the rules for registering shipping under a French flag. Sailors' unions say the changes are a threat to French jobs.
