Strauss-Kahn plight 'crushing and painful': France's Lagarde
French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde, tipped in some quarters to replace embattled Dominique Strauss-Kahn as IMF chief, said Monday her compatriot's plight was "crushing and painful".
Asked to comment on reports she could step into Strauss-Kahn's shoes, Lagarde refused all comment.
But asked about the conditions of his arrest, Lagarde said: "All this is obviously both crushing and painful from whatever angle you take".
"There is a judicial process taking place accoring to American law and procedure," she added. "I cannot comment on this."
