A haul of modern art masterpieces stolen in Paris overnight was worth between 90 and 100 million euros, and not 500 million as had been earlier reported, Paris city hall said Thursday.

A lone thief broke into the city's Musee d'Art Moderne and made off with five works, including paintings by Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso.

Judicial sources initially told reporters that the missing works were worth around half-a-billion euros, but municipal officials later lowered the estimate at a press conference at city hall.
