MADRID, Nov 14 (AFP) - Spain's ministry of public works Sunday formally announced the beginning of work on a 44-kilometer (27-mile) rail link between the Spanish and French high-speed rail systems.

When completed in 2009, the link between Figueras and Perpignan will enable passengers from northern Europe to travel at speeds of up to 350 kilometres an hour (217 miles per hour) to Madrid and Seville without changing trains.

The project, which is scheduled to cost almost one billion euros (1.3 billion dollars), entails the building of an eight-kilometre tunnel and nine viaducts.
