PARIS, Sept 22 (AFP) - Khaled, an Algerian-born singer known in his adopted France as the "king of rai", was put under criminal investigation by a Paris judge Wednesday for failing to look after his nine-year-old son and fiddling finances to make it look like he is bankrupt, officials said.

The 44-year-old musician, born Khaled Hadj Brahim, was taken into custody Tuesday, police and legal sources said, adding that the judge released him on bail Wednesday pending the probe's outcome.

According to a legal source, Khaled is suspected of stopping regular payments to his son born out of wedlock in 1995 and for organising to look insolvent so no financial demand can be made upon him.

Khaled, who moved to France in the 1980s, has carved out a solid career in France and North Africa with his jazzy form of Arabic pop music, although his star has faded in recent years.

His last big hit, "Aicha", was brought out in a 1996 album named after his daughter Sahra.
