PARIS, May 3 (AFP) - Celebrated French sexologist Gilbert Tordjman has been ordered to stand trial for eight rapes and one sexual assault, sources close to the matter said Tuesday.

The doctor, who is the author of numerous works like "Sexual Dialogue" and "Violence, Sex and Love", was placed under investigation in 2002 after several former patients filed complaints accusing him of rape and fondling.

Initially implicated on 15 counts of rape and sexual assault, Tordjman will ultimately face trial on nine charges, the other six having been thrown out.

Tordjman, who is in his late 70s, has repeatedly denied the charges against him.
