The seven-year-old star of a Franco-Australian movie to curtain the Cannes film festival on Sunday climbed its fabled red carpet with the remainder of the cast.

Young Morgana Davies joined the winner of last year's Cannes best actress award, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and two other children on the cast of "The Tree", a tale about nature's power over people premiering after the awards ceremony.

The movie, featuring a supersize Moreton Bay fig tree and directed by Julie Bertuccelli, won a warm reception from critics.

The Moreton Bay fig tree's role in the film "is about nature, how small we are compared to nature, a feeling which is particularly strong in Australia," Bertuccelli told AFP this week.

Gainsbourg, who plays in English in the film, said she enjoyed working in the language. "It gives me distance," she said.
