PARIS, June 13, 2006 (AFP) - Segolene Royal, the Socialist tipped to become France's first female president, has been rated one of the world's sexiest women, according to a survey in a French men's magazine released Tuesday.

The 52-year-old politician took a sizzling sixth place in the 100-spot FHM ranking, beating the top models Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell and the big-screen beauties Penelope Cruz, Scarlett Johansson and Monica Bellucci.

The Socialist Party (PS) politician -- a mother of four whose partner is PS first secretary Francois Hollande -- came in just two places below the US movie siren Angelina Jolie.

First place went to the top model Adriana Karembeu -- wife of the French footballer Christian Karembeu -- according to the survey of 487 men aged 15 and over, carried out by the CSA polling institute for FHM.

Tall, elegant and impeccably turned out, observers believe Royal -- who is striving to present herself as a fresh new alternative on the French political scene -- can use her looks as an asset.

France "chooses its presidents more for their 'face' than for their policies or ideas," behavioural expert Georges Chetochine told Le Parisien newspaper.

Observers note that Royal's public image has changed considerably in the past decade, going from bespectacled academic to designer-clad elegante.

Since the countdown began to the Socialist nomination in November, she has also worked on her voice -- shifting from high-pitched, aggressive tones to deeper, sultrier ones, Chetochine said.

"She plays on her beauty -- by wearing skirts rather than trousers, a youthful hair-style: who would think she is over 50?"

"She stands up very straight, holds her chin up -- which makes her look highly determined and strong-willed. She looks like a women with a mission."
