Rescuers searching for six fishermen whose trawler ran into trouble in high seasBREST, France, January 7, 2008 - Rescuers were searching Monday for six
fishermen whose trawler ran into trouble in high seas off the French coast
after finding a first safe and sound, maritime officials said.
Alerted by a distress signal in the early hours of the morning, rescuers
found two lifeboats empty when they arrived at the scene near Ile Vierge
island off the Brittany coast, officials said.
"Weather conditions in the area were bad with swells of four to five metres
(13 to 20 feet)," the maritime police said.
The fisherman who was recovered was of Portuguese origin, officials said.
The 24-metre trawler La Petite Julie, registered in nearby Saint-Brieuc,
was found sinking 30 nautical miles from the island.
