French President Nicolas Sarkozy's 21-year-old son announced Wednesday he would run for a seat on the local council of the Hauts-de-Seine district outside Paris

   PARIS, February 21, 2008 - French President Nicolas Sarkozy's 21-year-old
son announced Wednesday he would run for a seat on the local council of the
Hauts-de-Seine district outside Paris -- as his father did two decades ago.
Law student Jean Sarkozy told AFP he would run as candidate for the ruling,
centre-right UMP party in March municipal elections.
The younger Sarkozy stole the spotlight recently in another local race,
when he forced out presidential spokesman David Martinon from the running in
the president's political hometown of Neuilly, after a poll showed Martinon
would lose.
After coasting on months of popular approval, Nicolas Sarkozy's poll
ratings have been in freefall in recent weeks, which may hurt the UMP's
prospects in the March vote.
