French President Nicolas Sarkozy's approval rating dropped two percentage points to 30 percent in October, the lowest in three years as he battles pension reform protests, a poll showed Tuesday.

The number of French with a negative or very negative opinion of Sarkozy rose five percentage points from September to 69 percent, said the opinion poll by BVA for media including L'Express magazine and France Inter radio.

Prime Minister Francois Fillon's approval rating dropped from 47 percent in September to 45 percent.

The poll was conducted on October 15 and 16 by telephone as French workers and students took to the streets to protest Sarkozy's unpopular plan to raise the minimum retirement age from 60 to 62.
