Sarkozy vows to tackle French oil refinery strike shut-downs

President Nicolas Sarkozy vowed Tuesday to take action against strike shut-downs at all French oil refineries that have caused fuel shortages amid national protests against pension reform.

"In a democracy, everyone can express themselves but you have to do so without violence or excesses," he told journalists in the French resort of Deauville following a summit with Russian and German leaders.

"I will hold a meeting as soon as I return to Paris to unblock a certain number of situations, because there are people who want to work and who must not be deprived of petrol."

"Am I afraid of excesses? Of course, one doesn't greet them with a happy heart. But the biggest excess would be not to perform my duty and not to plan pension financing."
