Paris - French President Nicolas Sarkozy will pay a visit to Martinique and Guadeloupe next week, his first trip to the French Caribbean since a strike that sparked rioting there, officials said Friday.

Sarkozy will travel to Martinique on Thursday and Guadeloupe on Friday as part of his government's efforts to revamp ties with France's overseas territories.

Guadeloupe was paralysed for six weeks in January and February during a general strike to press demands for increases for low wage earners.

The movement spread to neighbouring Martinique and further away, to the Indian Ocean island of La Reunion.

France was forced to deploy hundreds of extra police to Guadeloupe during the protests, in which one activist was shot dead, and the government promised pay rises.

Officials said Sarkozy will attend a ceremony paying tribute to World War II Resistance fighters in Martinique before traveling to Guadeloupe on Friday.
