Sarkozy to announce new French government at 1915 GMT

President Nicolas Sarkozy is to announce the line-up of France's newly reshuffled government at 1915 GMT, his office said Sunday, as reporters gathered at his Elysee Palace.

Earlier, Sarkozy had re-apointed Prime Minister Francois Fillon to his post, and the pair held a series of meetings through the course of the day to thrash out the new cabinet list.

Leaked reports suggested that the line-up would be little changed in terms of its big-hitters, but that the cabinet would be smaller and more in tune with the right-wing president's deficit-cutting austerity agenda.

Sarkozy is due to seek re-election in May 2012, and appears to be trying to shore up his conservative base after losing centre-right and centrist support.

Fillon's outgoing administration resigned Saturday, a traditional formality that allowed Sarkozy to clear the decks and prepare his long-awaited reshuffle, a move he announced in June, triggering months of political intrigue.
