French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Tuesday denounced the release of thousands of US diplomatic documents by WikiLeaks as "the ultimate degree of irresponsibility," the government spokesman said.

The French leader condemned the release of the diplomatic cables during a weekly cabinet meeting, spokesman Francois Baroin told reporters.

The leaked cables have left diplomats worldwide red-faced and have drawn the ire of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton who called their release an "attack" on the US and the world.
