A meeting between French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his Benin counterpart Thomas Boni Yayi expected to focus on piracy off west Africa has been postponed, the French embassy said Monday.

The meeting in Paris, originally set for Monday, was postponed to November 8 "due to the international financial situation," the embassy said in a statement, noting that Sarkozy is the current chairman of both the Group of Eight and the G20.

Benin, a former French colony, has seen a surge in pirate attacks off its coast this year, raising concerns in the shipping industry.
