Sarkozy makes first visit to New Caledonia
French President Nicolas Sarkozy arrived in New Caledonia on Friday for a two-day visit to the South Pacific archipelago, which has been the scene of deadly protests in recent weeks.
Sarkozy, who had a brief stopover in Beijing on Thursday for talks with his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao, will open the Pacific Games on Saturday evening on what is his first visit to the French territory.
Violence erupted on the island of Mare earlier this month after protesters angry at rising air fares blockaded an airfield, with four people killed in clashes on August 6.
