French President Nicolas Sarkozy Friday hailed Michael Jackson as a universal artist "who had brought a lot to music and dance."

Baie-Mahault - French President Nicolas Sarkozy Friday hailed Michael Jackson as a universal artist "who had brought a lot to music and dance."

"I felt a great emotion firstly because a page has turned and I found it quite distressing to see these images of a young Jackson with his childish face and hair and colour that had not changed," he said in the French territory of Guadeloupe.

"He was a man who brought a lot to music and dance," Sarkozy said, adding: "I will always remember the first time I saw him doing (the Moonwalk.)"

Sarkozy said he admired Jackson's ability to "attract emotion from different kinds of people all over the world" and stressed the star was "extremely talented."

The self-styled "King of Pop" died on Thursday in Los Angeles at the age of 50, just weeks before he was due to give a series of comeback concerts in London.
