PARIS - Video footage of President Nicolas Sarkozy reprimanding a TV technician who did not greet him when he arrived at the studio for an interview drew more than 300,000 hits on the Internet on Tuesday.
"It's a question of manners," Sarkozy tersely told the employee who had not responded to his "hello sir" when he clipped a microphone to the president's tie.
"I mean, when you're invited, you're entitled to have people say 'hello' to you," said the president who was sitting on the television set ahead of the live interview on France 3 television.
Sarkozy went on to suggest that the technician should not be working for state television.
"Incredible!" he remarked.
The footage was recorded as Sarkozy prepared for one-hour live interview on his plans for the French EU presidency.
It was posted on the websites of the popular Dailymotion and Rue89 Monday night and by Tuesday more than 300,000 people had seen the sequence.
The president last week announced plans to overhaul public television by gradually phasing out advertising and directly naming the president of France Television.
Asked about the video, a spokesman for the presidency on Tuesday said "no comment".
Sarkozy has been caught several times before in off-the-record videos posted on the web, most embarrassingly at a farm show in February when he was filmed swearing at a member of the public who refused to shake his hand.
