Sarkozy among targets of Athens parcel bombs: police
French President Nicolas Sarkozy was among the intended recipients of four parcel bombs found in Athens on Monday, police said, after one ignited and lightly injured a woman.
The parcel addressed to Sarkozy was found in the hands of two suspected far-left militants after a similar package intended for the Mexican embassy in Athens detonated inside a courier company and injured the staffer's hand.
Police subsequently found and exploded two more devices addressed to the Belgian and Dutch embassies in Athens.
A police spokesman described the affair as "rather ridiculous."
"The incident seems rather ridiculous and in Sarkozy's case it's quite evident that this parcel would never have reached its destination," police spokesman Thanassis Kokalakis told AFP.
Attacks on government and police targets are relatively frequent in Greece and are commonly attributed to far-left extremists, though they are usually designed to avoid causing injury.
