French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his US counterpart Barack Obama agreed Sunday during a phone conversation on the need for a "wide-ranging response to the disarray currently affecting the markets", Sarkozy's office said.

In Washington, the White House confirmed that Obama had spoken to the French president about the economic situation.

"They agreed on the importance of Europe taking resolute action to build confidence in the markets," White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said in a statement.

Shortly before Sarkozy talked with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and the two are "in complete agreement on the measures to be announced" in Brussels to defend crisis-hit euro nations, his office said.

Obama also spoke earlier with Merkel.
