Sarkozy, Merkel to meet ahead of eurozone summit
French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel will meet in Berlin Wednesday to prepare for the upcoming eurozone summit, the French presidency announced late Tuesday.
The meeting is expected Wednesday afternoon, after which Sarkozy plans to dine with Merkel in Berlin before travelling Thursday morning to the summit in Brussels, a statement said.
The two leaders decided on the meeting in a telephone conversation Tuesday evening, two days ahead of the summit that will look at formulating a second rescue package for Greece.
Merkel warned earlier Tuesday that the talks may not produce a solution to the problem, which has markets worried that Athens may default on its 350-billion euro ($500 billion) debt and spark a chain reaction in Europe's weakest economies.
